Project Management
These courses are designed for foremen who are looking to move into project management, or people who are early in their career and are looking to become stronger project managers. The course curriculum focuses on delivering a project successfully by coordinating and leading a project team of architects, engineers, and multiple specialized subcontractors.

Building upon the skills learned in the Managing Project Schedules course, this session takes a deeper dive into the details of a schedule for an MEP contractor. Methods to properly schedule and document items such as MEP coordination, BIM work, and prefabrication activities will be discussed using a real-world project. Tracking methods for cumulative impact will also be discussed.

The construction industry inherently carries large levels of legal liability, and contractors need to understand their obligations in order to have a successful project. This session focuses on the primary issues that lead to claims on a construction project and the strategies that can be used to help avoid the claims process to be a more profitable company.

There are many different forms of communication and several different types of media that are often used in the construction industry. This session looks at making written communication more effective than oral communication, and strategies for proper correspondence etiquette. Several real-world examples will be analyzed and troublesome phrases will be examined that often produce undesired outcomes.

Construction contracts continue to evolve, and many subcontracts issued by general contractors have become increasingly one-sided in recent years. This session will review some of the emerging trends in contracts and show how these contracts are adding additional risk to subcontractors. This will show specific words and clauses that should be avoided in today’s contracts and strategies to address the added liability.

Documentation is one of the most important aspects in maintaining productivity on any project, and an also be the key factor in worse case scenarios, or in winning construction claims. This session reviews the requirements for effective documentation as a normal part of business activity, to ensure profitability. Also discussed will be the role of documentation in court or arbitration cases.

Engineers and Contractors are confronted with a variety of ethical situations every day. Familiarity with relevant ethical codes that govern the construction industry is critical in order to fashion an appropriate response to those situations. A review of strengths and weaknesses of ethical codes as well as state and federal laws will be discussed. Case studies in engineering ethics will be discussed as well as the steps needed to make an ethical decision.

Leadership is a popular topic in the construction industry, but the key question is: what makes a good leader? This session looks at the psychology and traits of different types of leaders, and the impact of leadership styles on different types of people. Use of the DiSC leadership profile will illustrate how companies can help develop individuals and teams within their company.

Construction contracts have specific requirements for different levels of communication and contractors are liable to honor these obligations. This session will review some of the common requirements as well as strategies on the use of verbal vs. written communication. Other topics such as electronically stored information (ESI) and developing systems to increase productivity while lowering liability for communication will be discussed.

This session dives into the strategies you can use to document your performance with a general contractor to defend yourself from late changes in a project that can have a severe impact on your productivity.

This session will examine the cultural aspects of negotiation and strategies that can be used in successful construction negotiations. The use of role-play scenarios will help illustrate these strategies.
